As Punjab CM targets the SGPC president for openly standing with the Shiromani Akali Dal, Harjinder Singh Dhami’s declaration that he is “proud to be a soldier of Sukhbir Singh Badal” has brought an old Panthic truth back into focus. From the era of Panth Rattan Gurcharan Singh Tohra and Parkash Singh Badal, Sikh institutions and Akali leadership have traditionally worked together, not at cross-purposes. Is today’s criticism really about safeguarding the sanctity of the SGPC or is it a political attempt to weaken Sukhbir Singh Badal by questioning the Akali–Panthic bond that has defined Sikh politics for decades ?

ਜਦੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕ ਕਮੇਟੀ (SGPC) ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਨਾਲ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਨ ਲਈ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਧਾਮੀ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ “ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਦਲ ਦੇ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ ਹੋਣ ’ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ” ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਪੰਥਕ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਰ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਥ ਰਤਨ ਗੁਰਚਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਟੌਹੜਾ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਦਲ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਚੱਲਦੇ ਆਏ ਹਨ, ਟਕਰਾਅ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ। ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ SGPC ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤਰਤਾ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਅਕਾਲੀ-ਪੰਥਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ?
