After two teachers died while travelling for election duty, the Bhagwant Mann Government announced ₹20 Lakhs compensation, an amount teachers’ unions have called a “cruel joke.” The tragedy has also exposed how teachers were sent to distant polling stations despite fog warnings, poor safety arrangements, and repeated protests. So, the real question is this, in a Government that spends crores on publicity, events, and announcements, why do teachers who die on duty appear so easily replaceable ? Are educators seen as partners in governance or expendable labour when the system fails ?
