In 2022, Congress projected Charanjit Singh Channi as its CM face, hoping his Dalit identity and “common man” image would help the party retain Punjab. Congress won only 18 of 117 seats, while Channi lost both seats he contested. Now Channi is again emerging as a prominent Punjab Congress face, while the high command has said there will be no CM face for 2027. His renewed CM ambitions have also faced pushback, directly or indirectly, from sections of the party leadership. So did Congress miscalculate by making Channi its CM face in 2022 and is the 2027 no-CM-face strategy a signal that it does not want to repeat that gamble ?
