After the Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 2002 murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, the verdict has once again drawn attention to the political influence of the Dera Sacha Sauda and its followers, especially in parts of Punjab and neighbouring states where the group has a significant presence.
Power tariffs in Punjab for 2026–27 have been reduced by 50 paise to ₹1.50 per unit across categories, offering relief worth nearly ₹7,851 Crores to consumers, just months before the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections. The revised rates, announced by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission, will take effect from April 1 and are expected to benefit domestic, commercial and industrial users. However, the move also comes at a time when the state continues to face concerns over rising public debt and subsidy burdens. At a time when Punjab is already dealing with significant debt, will the reduction in power tariffs be seen purely as consumer relief or will it also spark debate over whether such financial decisions are sustainable for the state’s long-term fiscal health ?
