Kewal Singh Dhillon’s appointment as Punjab BJP President has sparked a major debate in Punjab politics. Once known more as a Congress era power networker close to Captain Amarinder Singh than a mass leader, Dhillon is now suddenly expected to energise BJP’s cadre across Punjab despite repeated election defeats and a soft spoken image. Many BJP workers who hoped the party would build its own independent grassroots leadership now feel Delhi has again imported a former Congress face instead of trusting long time cadre leaders. The bigger question now is, will Kewal Singh Dhillon actually help BJP grow in Punjab, or will this experiment only make Sukhbir Badal look like a stronger and more dependable option for urban Hindu voters disappointed with both AAP under Bhagwant Mann and Congress under Raja Warring ?
