But beyond highlighting Congress factionalism, the bigger political test for the BJP is its own journey in Punjab after breaking away from its long-time ally, the Shiromani Akali Dal. As the party tries to grow independently for the first time, the real question is whether focusing on rivals’ weaknesses will help it expand or whether the lack of a strong grassroots base and social acceptance could eventually turn the spotlight back on the BJP itself.
