Is this a reflection of regional pride, historical tradition, or something else?

With a fresh FIR registered against Bikram Singh Majithia, police raids conducted at multiple locations, and speculation once again growing over a possible arrest, Punjab politics finds itself revisiting a familiar battle. For the Shiromani Akali Dal, the timing is significant, coming just as the party is trying to rebuild its political relevance ahead of 2027. Supporters argue that every action against Majithia only strengthens his image as a leader being politically targeted, while critics say repeated legal controversies continue to distract the party from its revival efforts. As the political temperature rises, one question is unavoidable if Majithia is arrested again, will it become the spark that helps revive the Akali Dal, or another setback for a party still searching for its comeback ?
For years, breakaway Akali leaders argued that Punjab needed a new Panthic alternative beyond both the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP. Yet with reports of possible talks between BJP and Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), the political debate has taken an unexpected turn. What was once presented as a challenge to old alliances now appears open to revisiting them. The development also comes at a time when Sukhbir Singh Badal is trying to re-establish the Shiromani Akali Dal as the main Panthic and political force in Punjab. As smaller factions struggle for space and visibility, these talks raise an uncomfortable question: Are breakaway groups building a genuine alternative, or are they inadvertently strengthening Sukhbir Singh Badal’s position by proving how difficult it is to replace the parent party ?
