Following Rahul Gandhi’s Sangrur rally, Punjab BJP leaders organised the ‘Zakhm 84 De’ conclave and demanded an apology from the Gandhi family for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The BJP’s timing and focus have once again brought Congress’s historical record into the political debate. While the 1984 riots remain a deeply painful issue, the larger question is whether BJP is using Congress’s past to gain political ground while avoiding questions about its own plans for Punjab. With jobs, agriculture, industry and drug abuse still major concerns, voters also expect clear answers on the state’s future. Is BJP using Congress’s 1984 record to dominate Punjab’s political debate, while leaving voters waiting for a clear vision of its own ?
