Since breaking away and contesting independently, the BJP (Amit Shah) has sought a much larger role in Punjab politics and is now making a major promise to make the state drug-free by December 31, 2029. After spending decades as the junior partner in Punjab politics, can the BJP now credibly promise to solve one of the state’s biggest problems or is Amit Shah asking Punjab to believe a much bigger political claim than the party’s own state-level record supports ?

ਭਾਜਪਾ ਕਈ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਦੀ ਜੂਨੀਅਰ ਭਾਈਵਾਲ ਰਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਗਠਜੋੜ ਤਹਿਤ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀਆਂ 117 ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਸੀਟਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 23 ਸੀਟਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਚੋਣ ਲੜਦੀ ਸੀ। ਗਠਜੋੜ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਚੋਣ ਲੜਨ ਦੇ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਤੇਜ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ ਅਮਿਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ 31 ਦਸੰਬਰ 2029 ਤੱਕ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਾ-ਮੁਕਤ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੂਨੀਅਰ ਭਾਈਵਾਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੀ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਹੁਣ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਅਮਿਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਦੇ ਸੂਬਾਈ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਮੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ?
