After serving as Punjab's sitting Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi lost both Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur in the 2022 Assembly elections. He then spent months away from active Punjab politics before returning to lead a fresh show of strength, with nearly 60 Congress leaders backing him for a bigger role in Punjab. This raises a question: On what political mandate is Channi seeking to lead the Punjab Congress ? Should a leader who lost both his seats and stayed away after defeat now become the face of the party's revival, or does his brief tenure as Chief Minister deserve another chance ?

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਵੀ ਚਰਨਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਚੰਨੀ 2022 ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਮਕੌਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਭਦੌੜ, ਦੋਵੇਂ ਸੀਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਾਰ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਕਈ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਰਹੇ। ਹੁਣ ਉਹੀ ਚੰਨੀ ਕਰੀਬ 60 ਕਾਂਗਰਸੀ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਵਾਲ ਉਠਦਾ ਹੈ: ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਕਿਸ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਜਨਾਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ 'ਤੇ ਚੰਨੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਦਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ? ਕੀ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਸੀਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹਾਰਣ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਗੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੜ ਉਭਾਰ ਦਾ ਚਿਹਰਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਾਂ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਛੋਟਾ ਕਾਰਜਕਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਮੌਕਾ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ?
