A day after the Akal Takht directed the Punjab Government to amend the anti-sacrilege law by removing its "objectionable" provisions within a month, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann strongly defended the legislation, insisting that those guilty of sacrilege deserved the harshest punishment and asking, "Tell me what is wrong with it ?" His remarks come after 69 AAP MLAs, along with other Sikh legislators, appeared before the Akal Takht, where some AAP MLAs acknowledged they had given their consent to the Bill without reading its contents. The episode raises a larger question: If concerns have been raised by the Akal Takht and even some legislators admitted they had not examined the Bill before approving it, should the Government continue defending the law without introspection, or first address the questions surrounding its own legislative process ?

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦੀਆਂ "ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ਯੋਗ" ਧਾਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਧ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦਾ ਡਟ ਕੇ ਬਚਾਅ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬੇਅਦਬੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, "ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਲਤ ਕੀ ਹੈ ?" ਇਹ ਬਿਆਨ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਆਏ ਜਦੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋਏ 69 ਆਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਹੋਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ 'ਆਪ' ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਿੱਲ ਦੀ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ। ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਵਾਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ: ਜਦੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ 'ਤੇ ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਜਤਾਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਧਾਇਕ ਮੰਨ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਿੱਲ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿਧਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ 'ਤੇ ਉੱਠੇ ਸਵਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਆਤਮ-ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦਾ ਬਚਾਅ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ?
