Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has once again reignited the debate over the Shiromani Akali Dal's relationship with the Akal Takht. Referring to the December 2024 Akal Takht edict directing the Badal-led SAD to undertake its organisational revamp under a seven-member panel, he alleged that while the party accepted the religious punishment, it rejected the Takht's organisational directions on legal and constitutional grounds. The episode raises a deeper question: Can a party continue to claim the mantle of Panthic leadership if it accepts the authority of the Akal Takht only when it is politically convenient ?
