After four decades of silence since the 1984 ban, Punjab is again debating student elections, this time with Education Minister Harjot Bains calling for “serious deliberation.” As protests erupt across campuses demanding representation, one question echoes louder than ever: Should student elections finally be revived in Punjab’s colleges and universities or are we still not ready for student democracy?

ਚਾਰ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਮੋਸ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, 1984 ਦੇ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ‘ਚ ਮੁੜ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਚੋਣਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਹਰਜੋਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੈਂਸ ਨੇ “ਗੰਭੀਰ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਵਟਾਂਦਰੇ” ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੈ। ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਕਾਲਜਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀਆਂ ‘ਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਫੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਹੁਣ ਸਵਾਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ, ਕੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਕਾਲਜਾਂ ਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀਆਂ ‘ਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਮੁੜ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਲੋਕਤੰਤਰ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ?
