The BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra has opened another front in its relationship with Punjab’s farmers. Farmers have questioned why the BJP is running a campaign against drugs in Punjab while drug consignments are still being reported as entering through the international border. They have also asked the BJP to explain the Centre’s concrete steps to stop cross-border smuggling instead of placing the entire responsibility on the Punjab Government. With BJP and Punjab’s farmers already carrying the baggage of past clashes, can the party convince them that its anti-drug campaign is about solving Punjab’s crisis or will every new BJP campaign face the shadow of that old political tussle ?
भाजपा की नशा मुक्त पंजाब यात्रा ने पंजाब के किसानों के साथ उसके रिश्ते में एक और विवाद खड़ा कर दिया है। किसानों ने सवाल उठाया है कि जब अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीमा के रास्ते पंजाब में नशीले पदार्थों की खेप आने की खबरें सामने आ रही हैं, तो भाजपा पंजाब में नशे के खिलाफ अभियान क्यों चला रही है। उन्होंने भाजपा से यह भी पूछा है कि सीमा पार से नशे की तस्करी रोकने के लिए केंद्र सरकार ने कौन-से ठोस कदम उठाए हैं, बजाय इसके कि पूरी जिम्मेदारी पंजाब सरकार पर डाल दी जाए। भाजपा और पंजाब के किसानों के बीच पहले से चले आ रहे टकराव की पृष्ठभूमि में, क्या भाजपा किसानों को यह भरोसा दिला पाएगी कि उसका नशा विरोधी अभियान पंजाब का संकट हल करने के लिए है, या हर नया भाजपा अभियान पुराने राजनीतिक टकराव की छाया में ही देखा जाएगा ?
BJP has announced plans to contest all 117 Assembly seats on its own and is taking a statewide anti-drug campaign across Punjab. But is BJP underestimating Punjab if it assumes national leadership, big rallies and central schemes alone can crack the state ? Punjab has its own political history, strong regional identities, local leaders and constituency-level equations. Can BJP win the political battle without first winning Punjab’s local trust ?
