Punjab was once among India's most prosperous states. Today, rising debt, shrinking fiscal space, declining industrial competitiveness, youth migration and political polarisation have become defining features of its public discourse. Yet almost every political party continues to promise more subsidies, more freebies and more populism, while avoiding the painful structural reforms needed to revive the state's economy. This raises a bigger question: Does Punjab still need another politician promising easy solutions, or does it need a statesman willing to take difficult, even unpopular, decisions for the state's long-term future ? Can Punjab's politics move beyond winning the next election to saving the next generation ?
पंजाब कभी भारत के सबसे समृद्ध राज्यों में गिना जाता था। आज बढ़ता कर्ज, घटती वित्तीय क्षमता, औद्योगिक प्रतिस्पर्धा में गिरावट, युवाओं का पलायन और बढ़ता राजनीतिक ध्रुवीकरण उसकी पहचान बनते जा रहे हैं। इसके बावजूद लगभग हर राजनीतिक दल कठिन आर्थिक सुधारों की जगह मुफ्त योजनाओं, सब्सिडी और लोकलुभावन वादों की राजनीति में उलझा हुआ है। ऐसे में बड़ा सवाल यह है: क्या पंजाब को अब भी आसान वादे करने वाले एक और राजनेता की ज़रूरत है, या फिर ऐसे राजनेता की जो राज्य के दीर्घकालिक भविष्य के लिए कठिन और अलोकप्रिय फैसले लेने का साहस रखता हो ? क्या पंजाब की राजनीति अगला चुनाव जीतने से आगे बढ़कर अगली पीढ़ी को बचाने की दिशा में सोच पाएगी ?
For decades, the Punjab BJP was often seen as the junior partner in an alliance, carrying the flag but never holding the steering wheel. Now, declaring that it no longer wants to be the "conductor of someone else's bus," the party has ruled out any alliance with the Akali Dal and is asking Punjabis for one chance to govern on its own. At a time when the Congress is consumed by infighting and the Akali Dal is still searching for unity, has the BJP finally sensed its biggest political opening in Punjab ? Or is the party putting the cart before the horse by claiming it is ready to govern before proving it can become a true mass force across the state ?
