For years, breakaway Akali leaders argued that Punjab needed a new Panthic alternative beyond both the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP. Yet with reports of possible talks between BJP and Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), the political debate has taken an unexpected turn. What was once presented as a challenge to old alliances now appears open to revisiting them. The development also comes at a time when Sukhbir Singh Badal is trying to re-establish the Shiromani Akali Dal as the main Panthic and political force in Punjab. As smaller factions struggle for space and visibility, these talks raise an uncomfortable question: Are breakaway groups building a genuine alternative, or are they inadvertently strengthening Sukhbir Singh Badal’s position by proving how difficult it is to replace the parent party ?
Captain Amarinder Singh has openly questioned BJP’s decision to appoint Kewal Singh Dhillon as Punjab BJP chief and admitted that the party is still not in a position to win Punjab on its own. By once again advocating a BJP–Akali Dal alliance, Captain has reignited a debate many believed was over. At a time when Sukhbir Singh Badal is trying to revive Shiromani Akali Dal independently and BJP is still searching for a breakthrough in Punjab, his remarks have raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. Has Captain Amarinder Singh unintentionally strengthened Sukhbir Badal’s position by admitting that BJP still struggles to fight Punjab politics without the Akali Dal’s network and support ?
