In Sahnewal, the 2022 Assembly election delivered a clear verdict. Congress candidate Vikram Singh Bajwa polled 46,322 votes (26%), finishing well behind AAP’s Hardeep Singh Mundian, while the Akali Dal stayed close. Despite visibility and party backing, Bajwa couldn’t convert the contest into a win. As Punjab politics slowly turns toward 2027, a blunt question hangs over Sahnewal. Was Bajwa’s defeat a result of the AAP wave or did it expose limits in his local connect and electoral pull ? And after a clear vote gap, can he realistically rebuild momentum or has Sahnewal already moved on ?
After serving as an MLA in 2017, Kulbir Singh Zira entered the 2022 contest with experience but finished third, as the seat slipped to AAP. Even earlier, his open confrontation with Rana Gurjit Singh had exposed deep cracks inside the Punjab Congress, with public letters and sharp remarks, dominating headlines more than grassroots work. Now, with 2027 on the horizon, has Kulbir Singh Zira’s aggressive internal stance helped him rebuild political ground or did party infighting cost him focus when voters were looking for unity and direction ? And can a leader revive his electoral standing if the party around him is still struggling to settle its own disputes ?
