As Giani Harpreet Singh publicly calls for Sukhbir Singh Badal to step down for pathic unity, offering his own resignation in return, the important question is being ignored. Has any Akali faction outside his leadership actually shown the ability to unite the panth on the ground ? Electoral setbacks aside, Badal still commands the widest organisational network and recall in Akali politics. Fragmentation did not start with one leader, and it may not end with one resignation, especially with 2027 nearing. Without a clear alternative showing real ground strength, is removing Sukhbir Badal about rebuilding the Akali movement or just weakening the only centre that still holds it together ?
