Sanjeev Khanna entered Punjab politics as BJP’s candidate from Dera Bassi in 2022, coming from a business background and party organization rather than traditional electoral politics. In a seat long influenced by Akali Dal, Congress, and now AAP, his candidature reflected BJP’s attempt to build a fresh urban face in the fast-growing Dera Bassi-Zirakpur belt. But in Punjab, visibility alone does not always convert into votes. The question now is whether Sanjeev Khanna was just a one-time experiment in 2022, or if BJP still sees him as a long-term face for Dera Bassi. Can rapid urban growth create space for BJP here, or will voters continue backing parties with deeper roots ?
