As the 2027 Punjab elections approach, the BJP has stepped up its 'Zakham 84 De' campaign to reach out to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a group traditionally associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal. With a possible BJP-Akali alliance also being discussed, the move raises a political question: is the BJP trying to take over an issue that has long shaped the Akali Dal’s support base ? Is the BJP challenging the Akali Dal’s claim over the 1984 legacy or are both parties now competing to become the voice of the same victims ?
2027 के पंजाब विधानसभा चुनाव नज़दीक आते ही भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने 1984 के सिख-विरोधी दंगों के पीड़ितों तक पहुँच बनाने के लिए अपना 'ज़ख्म 84 दे' अभियान तेज़ कर दिया है। ये पीड़ित पारंपरिक रूप से शिरोमणि अकाली दल से जुड़े माने जाते रहे हैं। ऐसे में, जब भारतीय जनता पार्टी और शिरोमणि अकाली दल के बीच संभावित गठबंधन की भी चर्चा है, तो सवाल उठता है: क्या भारतीय जनता पार्टी उस मुद्दे पर अपनी पकड़ बनाने की कोशिश कर रही है, जिसने लंबे समय से शिरोमणि अकाली दल के जनाधार को आकार दिया है ? क्या भारतीय जनता पार्टी 1984 की विरासत पर शिरोमणि अकाली दल के दावे को चुनौती दे रही है या दोनों पार्टियाँ अब उन्हीं पीड़ितों की आवाज़ बनने की होड़ में हैं ?
Despite never winning Punjab on its own, the BJP is emerging as a preferred destination for leaders leaving the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal. Recent entrants include AAP MLAs Chetan Singh Jouramajra, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh. Earlier, Raghav Chadha and five other AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, H.S. Phoolka, Jagmeet Brar and several Akali leaders also joined the BJP. While the BJP gains experienced leaders and their local networks, these repeated defections raise questions about political loyalty and the party’s own strength in Punjab. Has the BJP become a political shelter for leaders seeking power, tickets and survival, rather than a party attracting them through its ideology ?
