Picked by a rebel committee, later disowned by the party, briefly seen with AAP, and then publicly reaffirming her Akali identity, her campaign ended in defeat with just 1,242 votes. While SAD has tried to distance itself from the episode, the damage was visible. Looking ahead to 2027, can Akali Dal realistically rely on Surjit Kaur again or does the party need to field a clearer, stronger face to rebuild trust in Jalandhar West ?
जालंधर पश्चिम उपचुनाव में सुरजीत कौर का छोटा और उलझा हुआ सफर शिरोमणि अकाली दल के लिए सवाल छोड़ गया। पहले उन्हें एक बागी समिति ने उम्मीदवार बनाया, फिर पार्टी ने खुद उनसे दूरी बना ली। कुछ समय के लिए वह आम आदमी पार्टी के साथ नजर आईं, और बाद में फिर सार्वजनिक रूप से खुद को अकाली बताते हुए सामने आईं। नतीजा साफ रहा, उन्हें सिर्फ 1,242 मत मिले और हार का सामना करना पड़ा। भले ही अकाली दल इस पूरे घटनाक्रम से खुद को अलग दिखाने की कोशिश करे, लेकिन नुकसान साफ नजर आया। अब 2027 की ओर बढ़ते हुए सवाल यह है कि क्या अकाली दल दोबारा सुरजीत कौर पर भरोसा कर सकता है या जालंधर पश्चिम में भरोसा दोबारा बनाने के लिए किसी ज्यादा स्पष्ट और मजबूत चेहरे की जरूरत है ?
Chamkaur Singh contested the 2022 election from Mehal Kalan as the SAD–BSP alliance candidate and finished fourth with 10,394 votes (9%). The result once again showed that alliance arithmetic did not translate into real traction on the ground, especially as AAP surged and Akali votes remained split. As 2027 approaches, a bigger question stares the Shiromani Akali Dal in the face: Should SAD continue to rely on alliance candidates like Chamkaur Singh in Mehal Kalan or is it time to rebuild and field its own strong, rooted face to reclaim relevance in the constituency ?
