This year’s Padma awards saw figures like V.S. Achuthanandan, Shibu Soren, K.T. Thomas, P. Narayanan and other prominent names from poll-bound states such as Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu being honoured. While the selections cut across ideological lines, their timing has raised eyebrows. Is this a sincere recognition of lifelong contributions or a calculated attempt to send political signals ahead of key elections ? And when national honours begin to reflect electoral geography, can they still claim to stand above politics or do they quietly become part of the campaign narrative ?
Repeated governance crises in BJP-ruled states have brought chief ministers like Mohan Yadav, Rekha Gupta, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Bhajan Lal Sharma and Mohan Majhi under sharp public scrutiny. Yet instead of course correction, the pattern appears consistent, low-profile leaders elevated while real authority is seen to rest with Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. As administrative failures mount but electoral dominance holds, a larger question emerges about how power is actually exercised within the party. Are these chief ministers meant to lead their states or merely manage optics while decisions flow from the centre ?
