With the Punjab Budget set to be presented on March 8, International Women’s Day, and fresh speculation around the long-pending ₹1,000 monthly promise to women made before the 2022 elections, the political timing has raised eyebrows. Nearly four years after the announcement, and with the state already under a heavy debt burden, the bigger question is whether the Budget stage is being used to revive expectations, or to carefully manage the narrative ahead of the final stretch before 2027. In Punjab’s high-stakes welfare politics, is this about policy clarity or keeping the promise politically alive ?
With Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announcing the ‘Meri Rasoi’ scheme to provide free pulses, sugar, oil and spices to nearly 40 Lakhs families, the welfare push is clearly moving deeper into the kitchen. But as subsidies expand from electricity to healthcare to now complete grocery support, the bigger political question is whether the Government is strengthening household security, or steadily turning governance into a freebie economy where relief replaces long-term income growth. Is Meri Rasoi a nutrition safety net for the poor or another step toward a model where the state runs the kitchen while jobs and earnings remain the missing ingredient ?
