Kuldip Singh Kahlon was the BJP candidate from Dera Baba Nanak in 2022, contesting in a constituency known for swinging mainly between Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal. He lost that election as Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa of Congress won the seat. But the bigger twist came after the 2024 Lok Sabha election, when Randhawa vacated the seat after becoming MP from Gurdaspur, leading to the Dera Baba Nanak by-polls. Instead of backing Kuldip Singh Kahlon again, BJP fielded Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon, who had earlier fought as an Akali candidate before switching to BJP. Ravi Karan Singh Kahlon also lost, bringing BJP back to square one in the constituency. Now the focus shifts to whether BJP returns to its original 2022 face or tries yet another experiment in 2027. Was sidelining Kuldip Singh Kahlon before the by-polls a costly misread, or has the party already moved past him ? Can he reclaim the ticket, or will Dera Baba Nanak see a third BJP face in three straight elections ?
कुलदीप सिंह काहलों 2022 में डेरा बाबा नानक से भाजपा के उम्मीदवार थे, एक ऐसी सीट जहां मुकाबला अक्सर कांग्रेस और शिरोमणि अकाली दल के बीच झूलता रहा है। वह चुनाव हार गए क्योंकि कांग्रेस के सुखजिंदर सिंह रंधावा ने सीट जीत ली। लेकिन बड़ा मोड़ 2024 लोकसभा चुनाव के बाद आया, जब रंधावा गुरदासपुर से सांसद बनने के बाद सीट खाली कर गए, जिससे डेरा बाबा नानक उपचुनाव हुआ। भाजपा ने कुलदीप सिंह काहलों को फिर मौका देने की बजाय रवि करण सिंह काहलों को टिकट दिया, जो पहले अकाली दल से लड़ चुके थे और बाद में भाजपा में आए। रवि करण सिंह काहलों भी हार गए, जिससे भाजपा फिर उसी जगह आ खड़ी हुई। अब नजर इस बात पर है कि क्या भाजपा 2022 वाले अपने पुराने चेहरे पर लौटेगी या 2027 में फिर कोई नया प्रयोग करेगी। क्या उपचुनाव से पहले कुलदीप सिंह काहलों को किनारे करना महंगा फैसला साबित हुआ, या पार्टी अब उनसे आगे बढ़ चुकी है ? क्या वह फिर टिकट हासिल कर पाएंगे, या डेरा बाबा नानक लगातार तीसरे चुनाव में भाजपा का तीसरा चेहरा देखेगा ?
Nimisha Mehta’s political journey has already seen sharp turns, from Congress links, to joining BJP, getting expelled for indiscipline, and then being welcomed back into the same party within months. Despite losing from Garhshankar in 2022, she has remained active and is still seen as a vocal face with some local influence in the constituency. Her return also suggests BJP believes leaders with ground visibility are still valuable in Punjab, even after public controversies. The bigger question now is whether Nimisha Mehta’s comeback to BJP is the start of a serious second innings in Garhshankar politics, or simply a temporary adjustment before the next ticket battle begins. Can a leader who has changed camps and returned after expulsion rebuild trust with voters, or will party turbulence continue to define her political image ?
