As the ‘Satluj’ controversy continues to dominate Punjab's politics, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has repeatedly invoked the wounds of the militancy era, while former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh has warned that reopening history only risks polarising the present and may ultimately benefit parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal, ‘Waris Punjab De’ and Akali Dal (Punar Surjit). Three decades after Punjab paid an enormous price for violence and division, should political leaders be healing the memories of that era, or are they once again discovering that the easiest path to power lies in awakening old fears, old identities and old wounds rather than offering new hope for Punjab's future ?

As the Satluj controversy continues, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has intensified the debate by posting graphic militancy-era videos on social media. What makes the controversy more striking is that criticism has come not only from the Opposition, but also from senior BJP leaders like Manoranjan Kalia, Laxmi Kanta Chawla and even former state BJP president Sunil Kumar Jakhar, who have cautioned against selectively reopening Punjab's darkest chapter and risking its hard-earned communal harmony. If leaders within his own party are urging restraint, is Ravneet Singh Bittu putting personal politics ahead of Punjab's peace and social cohesion ?
