The Shiromani Akali Dal’s internal surveys have favoured an alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The reported seat-sharing formula gives the BJP 60 seats and the Akali Dal 57, while the BJP may accommodate Akali Dal Punarsurjit from its own quota. With urban seats, rural influence and the chief minister’s post all in play, can this alliance turn seat-sharing arithmetic into public support ? In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 18.56% of Punjab’s vote share, while the Shiromani Akali Dal received 13.42%. Together, they accounted for nearly 32% of the vote. However, the BJP won no seats, and the Akali Dal won just one. The two parties are now discussing an alliance for the 2027 Assembly elections, but talks remain stuck over seat-sharing, constituencies and the Chief Ministerial candidate. Can their combined vote share translate into a winning alliance or will the struggle over seats and leadership weaken their chances ?
