Speculation over a possible reunion between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP has intensified after leaders from both parties were seen together at a wedding reception in Chandigarh. Yet, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal has refused to give a clear answer, saying, “You will get to know in a few days.” While Amit Shah has spoken of an NDA government in Punjab, the BJP’s state leadership says it will contest all 117 seats independently. These mixed signals have left the future of the two parties’ political partnership uncertain. Is Sukhbir Singh Badal’s silence a sign of uncertainty within the alliance talks or a calculated move to keep his options open before 2027 ?

The reported alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP ahead of the 2027 Punjab elections comes with a major change in seat-sharing. BJP, which earlier contested just 23 seats, may now contest 47–48 of the 117 seats. This would give it a much larger role in the alliance. The final agreement is yet to be announced. If BJP gets nearly half the seats this time, will the Shiromani Akali Dal still be able to lead the alliance in Punjab or is it slowly giving up its position as the dominant partner ?
