With the passing of former Jalandhar Mayor and 2022 BJP candidate from Kartarpur, Surinder Mahey, BJP has lost its most recognisable face in Kartarpur. Mahey had switched from Congress to BJP and contested the 2022 Assembly election and was seen as the party’s key bridge into the constituency. As BJP looks ahead to 2027, a clear question is, who will the BJP field from Kartarpur, and does the party even have a ready successor on the ground ?

Ranjit Singh Gahlewal contested from Samrala on a BJP ticket in 2022 but remained a marginal player, polling just over 2,300 votes. While BJP is still weak in Assembly politics here, the party is now trying to slowly make inroads through block samiti and zila parishad wins in and around Samrala. With this ground-level push underway, a practical question arises ahead of 2027: Can Ranjit Singh Gahlewal convert these local-body gains into real Assembly momentum for BJP or does Samrala still remain out of reach for the party ?
