As the BJP slowly works to expand its footprint in Punjab, Deepak Talwar is emerging as one of the party’s more visible local faces. In a constituency, where the BJP has failed to make a difference, it is now trying to shift from symbolic presence to serious contest. But visibility alone does not equal viability.

Dilbag Rai’s political story in Chabbewal reflects BJP’s larger confusion in Punjab. As the BJP candidate in the 2022 Assembly election, he secured only 4,073 votes (3.6%) but remained the party’s original face in the constituency. Yet in the 2024 by-poll, he was sidelined as the BJP chose turncoat Sohan Singh Thandal instead, only for Thandal to later walk back to the Akali Dal. With 2027 drawing closer, will BJP return to its loyal worker and field Dilbag Rai again or will it again wait for a turncoat who has a bigger impact on ground ?
