The Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP are reportedly close to renewing their alliance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The proposed deal could see the Shiromani Akali Dal contest more than 60 of Punjab’s 117 seats, with the BJP giving up its demand to be the senior partner. But the two parties split in 2020 over the farm laws, and rebuilding trust among farmers remains a major challenge. If both the parties are ready to join hands again, is this reunion driven by a shared vision for Punjab or by the need to improve their electoral prospects ?
शिरोमणि अकाली दल और भाजपा 2027 के पंजाब विधानसभा चुनावों से पहले अपना गठबंधन फिर से बनाने के करीब बताए जा रहे हैं। प्रस्तावित समझौते के तहत शिरोमणि अकाली दल पंजाब की 117 सीटों में से 60 से अधिक सीटों पर चुनाव लड़ सकता है, जबकि भाजपा गठबंधन में सबसे बड़ी पार्टी बनने की अपनी मांग छोड़ सकती है। लेकिन दोनों दल 2020 में कृषि कानूनों के मुद्दे पर अलग हो गए थे, और किसानों का भरोसा दोबारा जीतना अब भी एक बड़ी चुनौती है। अगर दोनों दल फिर से हाथ मिलाने को तैयार हैं, तो क्या यह गठबंधन पंजाब के लिए साझा सोच पर आधारित है या अपनी चुनावी संभावनाएँ बेहतर बनाने की जरूरत से प्रेरित है ?
Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler says the party’s manifesto will reflect the views and concerns of Punjabis, as Punjab faces economic pressure, law-and-order concerns and industries moving out of the state. But for the Youth Akali Dal, the real test is whether young people see a future in the party’s vision. Can it offer fresh answers on jobs, migration and business opportunities or will its promises struggle to connect with a generation looking beyond Punjab ?
