While AAP dominated many civic bodies, Congress managed to hold on to Chamkaur Sahib and Morinda, areas closely linked to Charanjit Singh Channi’s influence. At a time when Punjab Congress is debating leadership changes and its 2027 strategy, these results have given both supporters and critics fresh ammunition. Do these results prove that Channi remains one of Congress’s strongest grassroots leaders, or do they simply show that holding a local stronghold is easier than leading a statewide revival ?

Gurkirat Singh Kotli comes from one of Punjab Congress’s most powerful political families, carrying the legacy of former Chief Minister Beant Singh and former minister Tej Parkash Singh. He won Khanna twice and even reached the Punjab Cabinet, proving he has electoral strength beyond just a famous surname. But in a family that also produced Ravneet Singh Bittu, comparisons are almost impossible to avoid. While Bittu has built a larger statewide profile and remains a constant headline maker, Kotli’s political journey has often stayed more constituency focused. The real question now is, has Gurkirat Singh Kotli built enough political weight to emerge as a major Punjab Congress face in his own right, or will the Beant Singh legacy continue to be defined primarily through Ravneet Singh Bittu’s larger political profile ?
