Akali Dal Punar Surjit has kept its distance from the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal, but the faction has also made it clear that it is open to an alliance with the BJP. Giani Harpreet Singh’s recent letter to Amit Shah, seeking central action on drugs, gang networks and other concerns, adds another layer to that political outreach. But what happens if the BJP and the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal finally come together for 2027 ? Will Punar Surjit still keep its distance from the Badal camp or will its openness to the BJP force it to rethink that red line ?

The Shiromani Akali Dal is pushing for an alliance with the BJP at a time when its old political network has changed sharply. Several powerful faces who stood with the party in the 2022 election are now with different Akali factions or Waris Punjab De. With the party already weakened by this fragmentation, is the alliance pitch a calculated strategy to rebuild its electoral strength or a sign that it no longer sees a solo fight as a realistic path to power in Punjab ?
