Baldev Singh Manuke remained a recognisable Akali face in Nihal Singh Wala in 2022, holding a section of loyal votes even as Punjab’s political tide moved elsewhere. But in changing constituencies, loyalty alone is rarely enough without momentum. His move toward the Akali Dal Punar Surjit camp now adds a new layer, fresh platform or smaller lane. Splinter politics can create openings, yet it can also divide the same old support further.

Manpreet Singh Ayali has once again placed himself at the centre of Akali politics by becoming convenor of the new Panthic Ekta Coordination Committee, trying to unite rebel Akali factions ahead of 2027. For years, many leaders complained about the Badal leadership, but few openly challenged it with a parallel structure. Ayali now appears willing to test whether dissent can become direction. Yet unity announcements are easier than building cadres, symbols, and votes on the ground. As 2027 approaches, the real question is whether Manpreet Ayali is emerging as the most serious challenger to the Badal grip over Akali politics, or whether this latest front will remain another headline without muscle. Is Ayali building a genuine alternative, or simply leading a protest that still lacks power ?
