In the 2024 Jalandhar West bypoll, Congress tried a reset by fielding Surinder Kaur, after its 2022 candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku moved to BJP. But the result was blunt, just 16,757 votes (17.71%), as the contest turned into a straight AAP show after party-switch drama between Sheetal Angural and Mohinder Bhagat. Was Surinder Kaur’s defeat about her own limited connect or did Congress once again misread a fast-shifting seat where party loyalty now matters less than timing and momentum ? And if Congress couldn’t capitalise even when rivals were busy shifting sides, what does that say about its readiness for 2027 ?
2024 के जालंधर पश्चिम उपचुनाव में कांग्रेस ने नया प्रयोग करते हुए सुरिंदर कौर को मैदान में उतारा, क्योंकि 2022 के उम्मीदवार सुशील कुमार रिंकू भाजपा में चले गए थे। लेकिन नतीजा साफ था, सिर्फ 16,757 मत (17.71%), जबकि मुकाबला असल में आम आदमी पार्टी के पक्ष में चला गया। यह चुनाव शीतल अंगुराल और मोहिंदर भगत के दल-बदल की राजनीति से पूरी तरह प्रभावित रहा। तो सवाल यह है, क्या सुरिंदर कौर की हार उनके सीमित जनसंपर्क की वजह से थी या कांग्रेस एक बार फिर ऐसे क्षेत्र को समझने में चूक गई जहाँ अब पार्टी की निष्ठा से ज़्यादा समय और माहौल मायने रखते हैं ? और जब विरोधी दल खुद आपस में बदल रहे थे, तब भी कांग्रेस इसका फायदा क्यों नहीं उठा पाई ? यह 2027 के लिए कांग्रेस की तैयारी पर क्या सवाल खड़ा करता है ?
Harchand Kaur was once a strong Congress face in Mehal Kalan, serving as MLA from 2007 to 2017. But in 2022, she slipped to third place with just 17,545 votes (15.2%), far behind the AAP surge. Soon after the defeat, she left Congress and joined the BJP. As 2027 nears, did voters move on from Harchand Kaur long before she changed parties, and does her switch to the BJP signal a fresh attempt at relevance or an admission that her old base had already faded ?
