Amritsar North has never truly been an Akali Dal seat; it was always BJP’s when the alliance existed. Before 2022, the alliance broke, party contenders scattered… and even their 2022 candidate Anil Joshi spent a mere 113 days in Akali Dal before jumping back to Congress. With Joshi gone and the seat historically awkward for them, who will Akali Dal dare to field this time?
Ranjit Singh Chhajjalwaddi was elected MLA from Jandiala (1985) and Khadoor Sahib (1992, 1997) on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. After SAD denied him a ticket, he joined Congress in 2017. But ahead of the 2022 elections, his son Satinderjit Singh Chhajjalwaddi also returned to SAD, saying “SAD is home, Jandiala is our family ground.” Yet in 2022, Satinderjit secured only 26,302 votes and lost.
