Once a Congress face rooted in agrarian Punjab, Sunil Jakhar moved to the BJP promising Punjab a stronger voice in Delhi. But as MGNREGA is diluted, job cards are deleted, and Centre–state cost sharing shifts the burden to states, rural Punjab is beginning to feel squeezed. Can Jakhar convincingly defend Delhi’s rural policy choices in a state where wage work has often been the last safety net and where villages are worried less about 2047 and more about next month’s work ?
