The BJP appears to be pursuing a multi-layered strategy ahead of the 2027 Punjab elections. By bringing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots back into focus, targeting the Aam Aadmi Party Government over the drug crisis, promising 63% DA and pending arrears to employees, and exploring an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, the party is addressing several distinct voter groups and political concerns. But these moves also raise a larger question: Is the BJP trying to build an independent political base in Punjab or does it see an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal as essential to overcoming its limited electoral reach ? How will these competing strategies shape its political identity in the state ?

As talks of a possible BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal alliance gain ground ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Sunil Kumar Jakhar, Manpreet Singh Badal, Jai Inder Kaur and Capt. Amarinder Singh have backed the idea. The support of leaders who came to the BJP from other political backgrounds raises questions about the party’s strategy, especially as the central leadership had favoured contesting alone. Are BJP leaders who switched parties pushing for a BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal alliance because they see it as the party’s strongest route to power in Punjab ?
