Talk of a possible BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal alliance has raised a bigger question about who would lead the alliance. BJP has publicly pushed for a larger role, including equal seat-sharing in recent statements, while earlier reports had described its demand for a “big brother” position. So, if the Shiromani Akali Dal accepts BJP’s terms and allows BJP to play the bigger role, can Sukhbir Singh Badal still remain the alliance’s CM face or would the leadership question become the real deal-breaker ?

The Shiromani Akali Dal has announced Jodh Singh Samra as its candidate from Ajnala. The constituency could again see a contest involving sitting MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal of the Aam Aadmi Party and Amarpal Singh Bonny Ajnala, who contested the 2022 election for the Shiromani Akali Dal and has since joined the BJP. That makes Ajnala an interesting test of how much party switching, old political networks and local identity matter in 2027. Can Jodh Singh Samra turn the Shiromani Akali Dal’s return to Ajnala into a serious political challenge or will the battle be shaped more by Dhaliwal’s incumbency and Bonny Ajnala’s new BJP platform ?
