The BJP is expanding its Punjab footprint by bringing in established leaders and members of political families from the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and other political camps. These leaders bring political networks, local contacts and years of experience. But there is a sharper political contradiction: a party preparing to contest all 117 seats on its own strength is still relying heavily on leaders whose political networks were built under other parties. Is BJP building an independent political force in Punjab or using borrowed political capital to build one ? And if the party already has to borrow political families, how strong is its own Punjab leadership really ?

At the same time, the Punjab government has faced questions over its own handling of the crisis. But if the BJP argues that Punjab must take responsibility for drugs reaching its streets, shouldn’t the BJP also have a clear answer on drugs allegedly moving through inter-state routes, the international border and major ports under the Centre’s watch ?
