East constituency has long been a stronghold of the Sidhu family, with Navjot Kaur Sidhu winning the seat in 2012; she was a BJP MLA at the time, but joined the Congress in 2016. In 2017, her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu won the seat on a Congress ticket. Now, with Navjot Kaur openly declaring she will contest the 2027 elections, and Navjot Singh Sidhu's return to active politics still unclear, Congress faces a critical question. Party divisions and internal tensions have already become visible, raising doubts about its strategy in the constituency.

Vijay Sharma Tinku, liquor businessman and close aide of former CM Charanjit Singh Channi was Congress’ choice for the Kharar ticket in 2022, beating Advocate Natrajan Kaushal for the nomination. The party also ignored former cabinet minister Jagmohan Singh Kang, who had lost to AAP’s Kanwar Sandhu in 2017 by around 1,900 votes. Tinku lost the seat, securing only 25,291 votes (14.31%) in 2022. With 2027 approaching, the question is: Will Tinku leverage Channi’s backing to stay in the race, or will voters demand a stronger, more experienced leader like Kang?
