Kuldeep Singh Vaid came into politics with a rare mix of administration and experience. An Ex-IAS officer, he won Gill as a Congress MLA in 2017. But in 2022, the picture changed sharply. Vaid finished third, behind AAP and SAD, polling 33,786 votes (18.35%) as the constituency swung decisively away from Congress.

Chaudhary Surinder Singh, who served as MLA in 2017, came close to reclaiming the seat in 2022 with 37,256 votes (30.1%) finishing second in the assembly elections. His performance showed that his personal recall and Congress’s base are still very much alive. As 2027 approaches, the real question is this, can a former MLA turn experience and familiarity into a full comeback for Congress or has the constituency moved from Congress and its workers ?
