Once the tallest political figure in Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh’s journey from Congress strongman to BJP entrant was expected to add heavyweight muscle to the party’s state ambitions. But after floating his own party, merging it with the BJP, and stepping into the national camp, Captain now appears more in the background than at the political frontline. In a state where politics rewards visibility and momentum, the bigger question is whether the BJP gained a power centre or simply a legacy name whose influence now lives more in past victories than present battles. Is Captain steering a second innings or quietly moving from command to ceremonial presence ?
कभी पंजाब की राजनीति का सबसे बड़ा चेहरा रहे कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह का कांग्रेस से अलग होकर अपनी पार्टी बनाना और फिर उसे भाजपा में विलय करना राज्य की राजनीति में एक बड़े बदलाव के रूप में देखा गया था। उम्मीद थी कि उनका कद भाजपा की पंजाब में पकड़ मजबूत करेगा। लेकिन राष्ट्रीय दल में शामिल होने के बाद कैप्टन अब राजनीतिक मोर्चे की बजाय पृष्ठभूमि में अधिक दिखाई देते हैं। ऐसे राज्य में, जहाँ राजनीति दृश्यता और सक्रियता से चलती है, बड़ा सवाल यह है कि क्या भाजपा को एक प्रभावशाली शक्ति केंद्र मिला या सिर्फ एक ऐसा बड़ा नाम, जिसकी चमक अब अतीत की जीतों तक सीमित रह गई है ? क्या कैप्टन दूसरी पारी खेल रहे हैं या कमान से सम्मानजनक दूरी की ओर बढ़ चुके हैं ?
Among the probable Chief Ministerial faces ahead of the 2027 Punjab elections, Sunil Kumar Jakhar is increasingly seen as a key leader for the BJP in the state. Currently the Punjab BJP president and a former Congress heavyweight, Jakhar brings administrative experience, sharp political articulation, and cross-party credibility. However, in Punjab’s identity-sensitive politics, his non-Sikh background has been a political constraint he faced even during his Congress days. At the same time, his consistent pitch for a possible BJP–Akali Dal understanding reflects the party’s recognition of its current ground limitations. The larger question is whether Jakhar can overcome structural and identity hurdles to emerge as a standalone CM face or whether his leadership role ultimately fits better within a broader alliance framework ?
